N.F.L. Fines Jets in Tripping Incident →
$100k. So by NFL logic, tripping someone is twice as bad as sexual harassment. Remember that, Jets coaches, and adjust your tactics for interfering with opposing players accordingly.

As a parent, I'm beyond angry
I thought George Atis’ non-apology deserved a Tumblr “quote” post. Unfortunately, those don’t lend themselves well to comments. Mr. Atis, here are your comments: As a parent, my heart goes out to her. Bullshit. If your “heart went out to her”, you wouldn’t have called a secret meeting to try to force Kayla Watkins off your kid’s hockey team. You...

Toronto lawyer George Atis: major-league dickhead →
In short: he couldn’t handle the fact there was a single girl on his kid’s coed hockey team, so he bullied her into quitting. Which is probably why his website is down, now that his name’s in the press. Seriously: doesn’t harrassment violate some sort of ethics code? Can we get the OBA on this clown?

hammerito: Since the eclipse doesn’t start for 2 hours, I need to kill time. If I get some interesting questions, I’ll post a video response. Feel free to ask deep, probing, existential… things. Feel free to not ask whether I’m single and/or to ask me to describe my penis. HERE I’m waiting for: “Describe yourself, and is your penis single?”

A map of food deserts in the U.S.
greengrey: downlo: The interactive version (with specific city names) is here. The concentration of food deserts in the southern U.S. surprises me. For whatever reason, I assumed there would be more in the northeast and maybe out west in states that are less densely populated. I’m not really surprised that most are in the south. I would think lower population = lower population density =...

Top 10 articles of clothing—PEER PRESSURE EDITION
All the other kids are doing it, so (and in no particular order): Old Navy jeans. Inexpensive, relatively durable, available in a variety of faux-designer styles. The workhorse of my wardrobe. Polo shirts. Collared, so they look a bit professional, but still practical when I’m on the lab floor. Argyle vest or sweater, paired with a casual sport shirt in a complementary colour. Adventures in tech support
As is usually the case when visiting family, I ended up working on my father-in-law’s seven-year-old PC this afternoon. I went back to it after dinner, leading to this exchange (paraphrased): Me: “Huh. It doesn’t want to wake.” Him: “Did you shut it off?” “No—the machine’s on; it’s just the monitor. The power light isn’t even...

I wish I could find the ad I just saw on YouTube.
There is nothing quite like Northern Ontario television. I just saw an ad that played like a setup for a bad Christmas-themed horror/revenge flick—creepy music, robotic acting, a couple of shots that looked like outtakes from the video for “The Thunder Rolls”; the whole package, really. It was for Christmas specials at a local day spa.
